Instead, she had grabbed him by the head and kissed him. It’s wasn’t a playful kiss either, it had been long and passionate and had left him completely stunned.

Then she smiled at him and disappeared.

A week later he had cornered her and set himself up for the shot knowing that he would only get the one chance. If he missed he would probably be dead.

The moment eventually arrived when she came round a corner three hundred metres in front of his position.

He remembered it well, aiming at her face, waiting for the optimum moment to fire and then gently squeezing the trigger.

It was only after her head exploded in a mess of bone and brains that he remembered her looking straight at him and smiling. Like she knew he was there all along.

That memory had plagued him for weeks after, causing him to wonder why she let him kill her and it was during one of these moments that he realised who she was.

She had been the Ebon woman who had stayed at his bedside all those years ago.

He had cried for hours after.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cloakdivision.blogspot.com/2011/05/claymore-part-ii.html' title='Claymore. (Detect, Rifle etc)
Basic Concept:
With Natural Aptitiude, the player would roll 3xD10 for the chosen skill instead of the normal 2xD10 and then pick the 2 highest dice. Thus increasing the chance of passing a skill roll in their chosen ability.
This would be the advantage of having the Natural Aptitude.
Costs:
To buy Natural Aptitude would involve spending a number of XP at 2 times the STAT level(DIA, STR etc) that governs the chosen skill.
Increasing the level of that skill would then also cost 2 times the normal cost.
Eg: Skill Level 7 to 8 normally costs 8xp, with Natural Aptitude it would cost 16 xp.

This hasn't been play tested yet and I would like some serious and objective comments on this.
I personally think it would add a different dimension to character creation and advancement, allowing players to get a specialisation of sorts.
Please give me your comments.
Flame On!
A Quick Clarification: The idea stems from the idea of using 3 dice instead of 2 for Natural Aptitude skills in MW RPG

Your Darkest Nightmare???

Your Darkest Nightmare???
Many years ago, somewhere before 1996 in fact, someone came up with this little gem.
I have no idea who the original author of this “award winning” work is, and to be honest I don’t care either… They should be shot for it!
I’ve suffered in silent shame for all this time and I’ve had enough.
The rest of you can endure this terrible evil with me.
This whole errrrr article is pretty much original, I’ve corrected some of the more obvious spelling mistakes, but that’s about it.
Don’t ask me why they’re called what they are, I have no idea .. Part 3

Part 3 of Sequencer… Just hope it’s been worth the wait.
Please be constructive with you “flaming”, as I will always be willing to modify the “rules” section of this post. After all, they’re just included as a guideline to work on.
Oh yeah, and bear in mind I’m not a geneticist.
Hope you are finding this interesting

SEQUENCER: BIO WARFARE DRUG

The Present.

The body that was delivered proved to have been the most important yet.
The scientists immediately set to work, dissecting and testing tissue samples and organs. The results were, to say the least, horrifying. Whoever was making this drug, was one step ahead of them, and this body was heavily saturated with a new version.
However, because of the research done so far, the team was able to move that much faster. Breaking down the new DNA strands would be the only true time consuming element, and so they spent three times the man hours cracking the code.
What they discovered was a revelation.
A super virus that tailored itself to each individual victim it was introduced to. They discovered that the virus worked its way into the body fully within 36 hours, after which point it started to become virtually undetectable. During this time, it would be integrating itself into the very genetic make up of the victim. After 36 hours, the virus would get to work and that’s when things would get unpleasant.
Physically, the host would begin to show subtle changes in their appearance and build. Generally, these could be seen as beneficial. Improved muscle grouping, excess fat reduction, toning of body shape etc.
All things the host would find pleasing.
They would not question these changes, as the virus would already be affecting the major brain functions of its host. And the Karma team found that to be the truly insidious part of the whole super virus.
It had taken some intensive research and not a considerable amount of genius, on behalf of the team, to discover the real goal of the virus.
After the initial 36 hours, the virus would start work on altering the chemical balance of the brain, a process dependant on the current mental state of the host. If the host were unstable, the process would start to work that much quicker than say, on a baseline mentally balanced individual.
The scientists carried out test on several volunteers, who had a range of different mental problems. The results confirmed their suspicions, and the next step to understanding began.
The host would begin to manifest delusional behaviour, believing for example, that their new improved physic was down to all their own hard work. The host would also take great exception to anyone who questioned this assertion, and so the next step would be initiated.
Paranoia and resentment would begin to show itself in force, most commonly the scientists noticed, in bouts of anger and minor violence. Usually to inanimate objects.
The virus would then start to increase the rate of imbalance in host brain, with the intention of triggering more extreme mental instability such as triggering a form of psychosis.
Once the virus had succeeded in triggering this initial psychosis, the rate of acceleration to insanity would be ten fold faster.
In all the test subjects, total mental breakdown and insanity occurred within 3 weeks of the initial trigger, and it was noted that there was little chance of anyone being able to stop the slide once begun.
The Karma scientists spent long months desperately trying to find a way round this problem, as reports began to arrive of increased numbers of victims. By the time they came up with a “solution”, 2431 SLA Operatives had to be retired entirely as a result of this Bio-Weapon.
The scientist came up with 2 pieces of technology to assist in the detection and possible removal of the virus.
The 1st was a blood test that could detect a tiny trace element left by the virus in the host body., as long as it was within a maximum of 8 days.
The 2nd was far more radical and fraught with danger. The complete alteration of the hosts DNA using, Karma Labs Gene-Splicing and Replication Technology. ®™
The operation, once started, could take anything up to 8 hours to complete, and would still need the host to use injected medication for 7 days after. Assuming that they lived through it in the first place.
The scientists found that the success rate was quite literally 50/50, and wanted to try and improve the odds, however Head Office decided that this was acceptable and approved the use of the operation on host victims.
To date, 54532 SLA Operative lives have been saved with these 2 bits of technology, a testament to the ingenuity and resources of SLA Industries.

GM Stuff…. Sort of

The basic premise of the “virus” is to cause fear and paranoia in the players.
Simply that.
I thought about putting up some “rules” for it, but then thought what’s the point?
How it’s done, well that’s up to the GM of course
How you add the effects to the players is up to you, Use this - don’t use this.
Modify it, tweak it, it’s an idea no more than that.
I had created this as a “back” story for my players, who will end up reading this, and it seemed to run ok.
If you think there’s something that could be added or changed to make it more interesting, then let me in on it please. It's straight forward design also makes it a very easy weapon to maintain and conversely, difficult to break.

A folding stock is fitted for ease of carrying or use in confined spaces.
The KK40 is fitted with a 25 round magazine allowing the operative to stay in the fight longer.
With selective firing modes and a respectable optimum range of 20m, this is an ideal Strike Squad Operative firearm.

There are options available for a laser painter or telescopic sight, and recoil baffling can be fitted with ease.

MAL "Pain Killer" Semi-Automatic Pistol

Here is just a little something other than all words….
This is a pistol of my own creation, with some ideas thrown in from Sincos and Johnny Automatic on the Team8 Forums. The most noticeable difference in this weapon, to the normal SLA Industries firearms, is that it makes use of a 15mm round. So in effect, you could consider this a unique weapon.

Clip: 5
Cal: 15mm
RoF: 1/2
Recoil: 5/12
Range: 10m
Cost: 910c
Weight: 1.5kg

MAL present the first in a new range of quality firearms.
Designed for the discerning Operative, the “Painkiller” is made of high quality ceramic and alloys.
The calibre was deemed a worthwhile size to introduce, as it bridge’s the middle ground between 12.7 mm and 17 mm weapons. The 15 mm round is available in all types and provides considerable stopping power, without the excessive bulk and expense of the larger 17 mm types.
The MAL Painkiller Semi-Automatic Pistol allows for two modes of operation. Single shot or Double shot. It is however recommended that only Karma enhanced or stronger Operatives use the second firing option, due to the large recoil involved.
The weapon has a unique safety system to prevent accidental weapon discharge, the front face of the trigger is in fact a safety switch, and the firearm is made live only when the operatives finger is pressed against that facing.
To activate the second firing option, the trigger is depressed as normal, but then held in the “fired” position. This activates the firing mode and two rounds are discharged.
The trigger is then released, and the weapon is ready for whichever option the operative requires.
This Double Tap system ®&™ 903SD is Patented and Trademarked by
Military Assault Laminates Ltd.
The weapon comes with a fitted laser targeter, which is activated by a button, on the left side of the grip. As yet, there is no provision for recoil baffling or silencer options.
Each weapon is custom tailored to the operatives hand size, and is also balanced specifically for that operative. Each MAL Painkiller comes in its own case and with a cleaning kit specifically tailored to this firearm.

Pistol Rounds:

15mm STD PEN 10 DAM 12 AD 4

15mm AP PEN 12 DAM 9 AD 3

15mm HP PEN 7 DAM 15 AD 7

15mm HEAP PEN 11 DAM 14 AD 6

15mm HESH PEN 6 DAM 25 AD 7

Bullet Costs: STD 6c AP 8c HP 10c HEAP 8c HESH 11c

Sequencer: Bio Warfare Drug. The scientists now lead by Professor Eleanor Kendrik set to work doing an autopsy on the body, and the resultant tests showed a new seemingly improved variant of the drug. What they discovered was a much more subtle change in the victim, a more refined corruption of its physical makeup.
Critically, they were able to obtain a phial of the drug they suspected of causing the radical physical changes. The drug was given to several volunteers, who were paid over 300unis each for participating in testing and the team studied and collated their results.
These tests showed that each individual who was exposed to the drug gained not only physical strength and toughness but seemed to display higher ranges of dexterity. In some cases, the test subject’s physique altered in such a way that it could only be described as improved.
The side effects were however, not quite as desirable. A week after exposure to the drug the test subjects began to display a variety of psychotic behaviours, each “unique” to the subject and therefore difficult to predict or control.
The scientists discovered that each subject was prone to self-harm and suicidal behaviour as well as fits of rage, or uncontrollable happiness.
They then decided to try and combine it with other well-known drugs, to see if they could diminish these less desirable side effects, and eventually came up with a combination of this drug and personal interest. This nullified the suicidal tendencies and replaced it with euphoric sensations that would leave the user wanting more. The main drawback was the time frame needed to administer the “antidote”.
During the many tests carried out, the scientists found that this mystery drug was virtually untraceable, and prompt medical assistance could only be rendered if the victim was fully aware that they had been infected.
After 5 years of tests and analysis, the Karma scientists believed they had got a solution to the problem.
Then in 902SD another badly shot up body was delivered to the lab.

To Be Continued…

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cloakdivision.blogspot.com/2005/11/sequencer-bio-warfare-drug-part-2.html' title='Sequencer: Bio Warfare Drug. Though nothing appeared to happen at first, the operative started to make a quite remarkable recovery.
The offending employee had, in the meantime been exterminated and the injector he had used was sealed as evidence.
After the operation was concluded, the operative in question was given a quick medical check. He showed no ill effects and it was assumed that the injector must have had Kick-Start Plus loaded into it.
It was only when a few weeks later, the same operative suffered a schizophrenic episode and proceeded to kill everyone he came across, that the matter came to the attention of Karma Labs. Before the operative was finally exterminated, it was reported that he was exhibiting higher than expected resistance to trauma and strength that could only be matched by a Stormer or Shaktar.
An autopsy was carried out on the body, and no trace could be found of any form of combat drugs. The muscle and bone structure did however show massive alteration, nothing that Karma currently had available publicly could do this.
Karma Labs realised that they had something completely new on their hands, to which they had no access or knowledge. So they began researching the mystery drug. Using an extract of DNA, which was taken from the operative during autopsy, they began experimenting on it to try an isolate the drug that had caused such an alteration on the subject. After several years of research the team working on the DNA finally still had not managed to isolate the chemical compound used.
Exasperated, senior management sacked the senior research staff and started again.

To be continued….

Missing Persons Report

Missing Persons Report

This made me laugh… ALL the credit goes my good friend Lib for this.
I hope it brings a smile to your face like it did mine.

>>>Begin transmission<<<
A missing persons report has recently been forwarded to me by an unknown source and it is most certainly of great concern to all of us in this friendly SLA neighbourhood. It read as follows: Missing Ebon goon known to recently have been using the name Serendipity although this may be a false I.D used for his lackey work in the SLA shit squad run by the nannythropes of uptown. He was last reported to have been outside the Pit of ill repute being harassed by a rather large stormer with a dull expression on his face and an individual who has himself confused with an inanimate weapon. This has concerned many individuals in the area as it is reported that had some of his appendages (not necessary to his low life kind) removed and placed ineptly into the facial orifice he most commonly termed as his mouth though it has often been mistaken for much darker regions of his being. >>>End transmission.<<<

Sacrificing NPCs

Sacrificing NPC’s

I’m sure all GM’s do this, kill off a Major npc (Non Player Character) in the game.
It gets done for a lot of different reasons though, usually the NPC is the bad guy the players are after or it’s someone they were sent to kill off.
Other reasons.. Hmmm that’s a bigger list than I can be bothered to type out
How many GM’s will willingly sacrifice a Major NPC in order to save the life of a player, to throw away without a second thought, a plotline???
I had this situation the other day, during a game.
Normally, I would be of the attitude that if a player had the bad luck to roll badly and get themselves dead, tough.
That’s the way the game goes… Well it should anyway, except most of us GM’s don’t tend to do that (Am I being presumptuous in the “most gm’s” part?), and will try and find away for the player to survive the nearly death experience.
There are a lot of times you just can’t save them and there are other times when you find some convenient way of altering the event or result.
Ergo, player survives and is none the wiser/smarter for it.
GM breathes sigh of relief.
Job done!
The other night I didn’t really have that luxury. A player rolled a double 1 (which is by definition, the worst case scenario), and should have died.
Player thinks “oh sh**”” I think “well that’s thrown a spanner in the works”.
(Polite version of what I was thinking)
How to get out of it? Cue major npc’s, two of them.
I gave one npc odd numbers and the other even numbers for a dice roll, and then asked the offending player to choose odd or even.
During this time, I had not revealed to the player what their fate was.
The player chose, I rolled the dice and then took the player to another room to tell them what had happened to them.
We then came back to the other players, the scene was acted out and right at the moment of certain doom, the chosen major npc saves the life of the offending player.
Exit one plot line.
Obviously the player was relieved to live but at the same time, all of them were saddened at losing the npc.
Was it worth it? In my mind the answer is yes, but at the same time it questions my ability as a GM to ensure a dangerous but survivable scenario.
What I did was lie to the players in order to ensure that one of them survived.
I felt it necessary to, on the spur of the moment, completely change the situation so that I could save that player.
A bit later in the game another player lost their character to a double1 roll and I could do nothing about it.
So, was I showing favouritism? Possibly.
Was I doing what was best for the players as a whole but at the same time killing off one of their major npc’s? Maybe not.
To lose a major npc is expected, but to throw one away to save a player?
Judge me as you will.

Ok here we go

Ok here we go..
One of the more contentious issues in the game of SLA Industries is the “truth”.
That background behind the game that a lot of people I know, liken it to the creation of Windows 95 (Sorry Bill). Nothing short of pure evil, that must not ever be spoken of. :o
Anyway, my opinion is.. Stuff ‘em.
I’ve been running a campaign for a short while now, that includes “elements” of the truth in it. Nothing really heavy, just hints and furtive goings on that the players would notice form time to time.
Gradually, these hints have built into a “bigger” truth that had begun to affect the way they thought about their lives and the world of SLA.
This brought about the question of “How do I learn of the truth, without it killing me?”
After a little discussion I came up with this idea (Thanks Carl)

I “reasoned” that in order to survive the truth, the players needed to have the mental strength to understand what they felt and saw.
There are 2 statistics that deal with logic and the capacity to learn.
These are Diagnose and Concentration.
I added these 2 statistics together and then divided the total by 4 (rounding down to the nearest whole number).
Example for those who “want” one:
Diagnose 8 + Concentration 7 = 15 ÷ 4 = 3.75 Rounded down = 3.
So what you have left is your “truth” statistic.
Whenever you become heavily exposed of have prolonged contact to truth related items/info/people etc, have to use this stat to cope/ survive from their encounter.
By rolling 2x D10 (Ten sided dice) and adding their “truth” statistic, the player has to equal or exceed a total of 15.
Failing the roll reduces the statistic by one or more, and success increases the statistic by one or more.
This way their knowledge and understanding fluctuates to reflect the varying stresses placed upon them by each encounter.
Rolls of double 1 automatic failure and death, however rolls of double 0 mean’s automatic success.
There are other drawbacks to this. As the statistic gets lower, the player would slowly fade from “reality” and die however as the statistic gets higher the player will also fade from “reality” and become one with the truth… Never to be seen again.
In it’s first test run last night (Wednesday), this seemed to have worked extremely well… And did end up with one character dying from a failed (double 1) roll.
As a GM, this makes me very happy… I think the players “dislike” me for it though (
*Dons Flame Retardant Clothing * Flame away people.

Welcome

Well, maybe I'm mad for doing this.
I was inspired by what I've seen on this "site" and decided (perhaps foolishly) to get a piece of the action :-)
SLA Industries is a Role Playing Game set in a dark universe filled with horror and lies.
Cloak Division is the name of a Corporate Division within SLA Industries.
(SLA is pronounced Slay)
Those that work within this department are effectively the "police force" of this organisation.
Liken them to Judge Dredd if you will - Judge,Jury and if need be, Executioner.
Here in this Blog, I'm hoping to "put on paper" my thoughts and ideas relating to the game, it's ethics and anything else anyone can think of :-)
Thanks for daring to visit.
